Cutting the first steel panel: MSC Meraviglia becomes a ship built for the future

The Italian word, Meraviglia, meaning ‘wonder’ in English, is the feeling of being amazed when we see something new, extraordinary, or unimaginable. In April, we cut the first piece of steel for MSC Meraviglia, the new MSC Cruises flagship, at the STX shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

When you are standing close to marvels such as the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, or amongst the skyscrapers of Dubai, all you can do is gasp in wonder. It is astounding to think of all the masterpieces the human race and its creative genius have been able to produce. This sentiment was the essence and inspiration for the traditional steel-cutting ceremony that kicked off the construction of MSC Meraviglia, the new MSC Cruises flagship that will be launched in 2017.

MSC Meraviglia is a sophisticated combination of state-of-the-art-technology, a love of the sea, design, comfort, and practicality. She is a ship that will dazzle her travellers.

MSC Meraviglia will be able to dock at any cruise port around the world, expanding your choice of itineraries and destinations: a huge added bonus for any traveller.

New design and technologically advanced features
Every season will be perfect with our new layout of internal and external areas. The luxury MSC Yacht Club area will be expanded. The whole ceiling of the inside promenade will be covered with a giant 480-m² LED screen featuring a digital sky capable of transmitting vistas, events, sunrises, sunsets and the starry skies at night. Entertainment areas have been multiplied; there’s a fun park and a water park, breathtaking panoramic areas, and two covered promenades.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, tells us “We have chosen a name that evokes the sense of awe and wonder felt upon discovering the innovative and practical features that are part of the unique style of MSC Cruises. This ship will unite the know-how of a young and daring company such as MSC Cruises, with 300 years of maritime experience, with the experience of one of the most avant-garde shipyards in the world.”

Next generation mega-ships
The Vista project is becoming a reality with the construction of MSC Meraviglia. Along with the Seaside ships – which bring the fun of a waterfront experience to the cruise – the Vista ships are the next generation of ships for the future. “Seven new ships make a total investment of 5.1 billion euro and will double MSC Cruises’ capacity by 2022”, states Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises.

Ultimate ecologically sustainability
MSC Meraviglia will not produce any liquid waste and will be able to neutralise its smoke and CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency will be guaranteed by the contours of the hull and the propulsion system. “MSC Meraviglia will be one of the most eco-compatible ships; safer and more technologically advanced than any other ship in the cruise industry” said Mr Onorato.

Three homeports
In 2017, during her first season, MSC Meraviglia will be the showpiece of the Western Mediterranean with its homeport in Genoa and the option to embark at Barcelona or Marseille.
